Kellie was staying at El Cosmico. Itâs a hipster place that charges a hundred bucks to stay in a Yurt, which, to me, is a glorified teepee. I wasnât surprised that Kellie invited me to stay the night with her. I pictured us laying in each otherâs arms but like most things, reality has a way of slapping you in the face. And wouldnât you know it, there were a bunch of girls and guys inside the goddamned teepee.
Kellie introduced me to everyone, and some asshole was playing the guitar. He looked like Evan Dando from the Lemonheads. I suddenly felt deathly sick. My brain started going to the dark places that I didnât want it to go.
âI think Iâm going back.â âAre you sure?â Kellie asked. âYeah, Iâm not feeling too good.â I half smiled and then walked out of the teepee. Kellie followed me and asked what was wrong. I stopped then turned around and hugged her. My mind went back to Amber for some reason. I knew love defeated me again.
âLet me get your number.â Kellie pulled her phone out but then I remembered I didnât have my phone.
I stood helpless in front of Kellie and at that moment, she looked like an angel. These things always happen to me. When everything is going right, I somehow manage to fuck it up.
âI donât have a pen and paper but if you want to meet us for breakfast about ten tomorrow at the food truck,â Kellie said.
âIâll see you then and I enjoyed tonight.â I leaned in and kissed her. It would be the last time I would ever see her.
I made it back to the motel. The sun was coming up over the mountains when I collapsed into bed. I started thinking about my obsessions again. I couldnât sleep but I seemed to be drifting in and out of consciousness.
The nightmare remains the same. The assault rifle feels good in my hands as I enter the school cafeteria. Amber is there with her friends when I open fire killing anyone in my sight.
I woke up drenched in sweat. I glanced at the alarm clock. It was almost two in the afternoon. I had missed breakfast but more importantly seeing Kellie. I remembered that I still had a six-pack and a pint of whiskey left. I got them out of the refrigerator and broke the seal on the whiskey. I took a few hits and then started on the beer. The last thing I remember was collapsing back into bed. When I woke up it was dark outside. The moon looked blood red and the desert was still there. I got in the rental car and headed north. I drove like a madman with no sense of direction. I decided to head to Marathon. There is an old hotel there and not much more. Itâs even more isolated than Marfa and if you want to disappear itâs ideal.
I checked into the Gage Hotel. I had enough for a couple of nights.
